M O N A L I S A... A Portrait of My Love

If someone would read it, he or she would interpret that it has something to do with the famous painting of Michael Angelo.  But this post would tackle beyond the mystery of Mona Lisa smile.  It would talk on the camaraderie and brotherhood of its members, especially in the melting pot of the South, Mindanao State University - Marawi City.

Mona Lisa is a fraternity and sorority group which was founded by a group of students at Silliman University on August 27, 1967.  Since then, the group has made into the portals of different schools and universities in the country.  In fact, it has found its place in the melting pot of the South.

Before I joined this organization, I have already observed that most of the members of Mona Lisa in MSU-Marawi City were leaders in their respective colleges and in different other organizations.  Plus, most of them were scholars of the university.

When we were oriented, the group was founded by a group of artists whose adoration was focused with the painting of Michael Angelo, specifically the Mona Lisa painting. Accordingly, the date could no longer be traced as it was created long time ago.

We knew at that moment, what were said in the orientation were nothing but lies.  They were just fabricated to lure us.  Were they effective?  I should say yes.  The words spoken were just kind of magnet that kept us glued.

But, those were not the main reasons why I joined personally with the group.  The camaraderie and the brotherhood that members have displayed have a great impact for us non-members.  It was the quality of the members that I was looking into.

So without much ado, after our orientation we proceeded with our one-day survival the day after.  We were five newbies, all were scholars except with one who was already on her last semester in the university.

We already have seen and observed members of Mona Lisa having contusions on their both legs. Some of them were having difficulty in walking, however, you could not see them in pain.  I saw them satisfied and never had any regrets of going through the pain.

Looking back, my parents did not fail to warn me about joining the fraternity. They have opened my eyes to the effects of going through the initiation process.  However, the feeling that none of your parents would object and of knowing that you would be one of the hopefuls of a fraternity was something that elated my desire.  Of course, curiosity could not be set aside.  Accordingly, you could not tell how painful it would be unless you have passed through the process.

So with the curiosity that kept my intention burning and the peer pressure because most of your friends in the dormitory have already undergone the process, I said yes.

I may have forgotten the exact date but as far as I could recall, it was on the first semester of academic year 1996-1997.  I guess that was July of 1996.

It was one Saturday of July 1996, we went to the area of the initiation.  We were five prospects of the group.  The initiation began in the morning, around 8:00 o'clock.  We were having fun at first because we had no idea what the initiation was.

When we were told to have our eyes blindfolded, everything turned black.  Silence prevailed for a moment. What we heard were our heartbeats and the air passing through our nostrils as we heavily breathed.  Then one by one, our baptismal started followed by a series of shouts.

The pain was beyond explanation.

Yes it was painful.  The lasted until almost 5:00 o'clock in the afternoon.

After I survived the initiation, all the pains were gone.  Even the hatred and the feeling of being betrayed were all vanished.  I felt a huge relief.

If someone would ask how would I describe the initiation process, I could not translate into words what I went through.  It takes a brother to fit the shoes of the brother.  In short, one has to undergo the process to describe its pain.

It is more than a score now since my legs sore and contused.  But the camaraderie that I have forged with my brothers and sisters continues until today.  Wherever I may go, the spirit of M O N A L I S A would be kept alive in my senses.

Forever proud brother here.
